(LAD Bible) – 28-year-old boxer John Cooney has died a week after being taken to intensive care following his defeat in his first Celtic super-featherweight title defence.
The Irish boxer had been fighting Welshman Nathan Howells at Ulster Hall in Belfast on 2 February and was stopped in the ninth round of the fight. He was assessed in the ring and then taken out on a stretcher before being rushed to hospital.
His promoter Mark Dunlop explained at the time that John had been ‘assessed by the onsite medical team of the British Boxing Board of Control and swiftly taken to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital for further treatment’. CONTINUE
